FAQ

FAQ

Why do I need a VPG400-certified CFexpress Type B card?

Attention Sony camera users: To ensure optimal performance, it’s crucial to use VPG400-certified CFexpress Type B cards. As of March 2024, Sony has confirmed that none of their cameras are compatible with non-VPG CFexpress Type B memory cards.

These VPG400-certified cards guarantee consistent write speeds of at least 400 MB/s, significantly reducing the risk of frame drops and freezes. This reliability makes them perfect for demanding tasks like high-resolution burst photography and shooting high-bitrate videos.

What is VPG? What are VPG200 and VPG400 certifications?

VPG stands for Video Performance Guarantee. The CompactFlash Association has defined the VPG200 and VPG400 standards, which are guaranteed to deliver sustained write speeds of 200 MB/s and 400 MB/s, respectively.

Who needs a VPG400-certified card?

“Depending on your shooting style, you might need a card with a fast minimum write speed. For example, if you’re a sports photographer, action photographer, or videographer, it is essential to have a memory card with a fast minimum write speed when shooting in continuous mode or recording videos.

Cards with VPG400s rating ensure that write speeds will never drop below 400 MB/s, so the risk of frame drops and freezes are minimized.”

What is the difference between CFexpress 2.0 and 4.0 memory cards?

CFexpress 4.0 cards are engineered to operate on advanced PCIe Gen 4 interface, effectively doubling the bandwidth compared to the previous CFexpress 2.0 standards.

This allows them to set a new benchmark with maximum speeds reaching 4GB/s for Type B and 2GB/s for Type A cards.

Is CFexpress 4.0 backward compatible with CFexpress 2.0?

Yes, CFexpress 4.0 cards maintain full backward compatibility with CFexpress 2.0.

What is the difference between CFexpress Type A and Type B?

CFexpress Type A and CFexpress Type B memory cards are both PCIe-based, although their physical dimensions and transfer speeds differ. CFexpress Type B measures 29.8mm(Width)*38.5mm(Height)*3.8mm(Thickness), whereas CFexpress Type A measures 20mm(Width) x 28mm(Height) x 2.8mm(Thickness).

A Type B card is capable of transferring data at twice the speed of a Type A card.

Which cameras use CFexpress Type B cards?

Some current cameras with CFexpress Type B card slots include:

Nikon Z6/Z7
Nikon Z6 II/Z7 II
Nikon Z8
Nikon Z9
Nikon D6
Nikon D850
Canon EOS R5
Canon C500 Mark II
Canon EOS-1D X Mark III
Canon EOS R3
Panasonic Lumix S1 / S1R
Fujifilm GFX100 II
Fujifilm X-H2S / X-H2

Do you also offer a CFexpress 4.0 memory card reader?

Currently, we offer a single-slot 20 Gbps CFexpress Type B reader, which delivers 2,000 MB/s transfer speeds. We are also launching a 40 Gbps CFexpress 4.0 Type B reader very soon.

Can I use my CFexpress Type B card in an XQD slot?

For cameras with XQD slots, a firmware upgrade is required to enable CFexpress compatibility. Please check your host device’s compatibility with your camera manufacturer.
